Early start today, breakfast at 7:00, 7:45 we are on the road, destination near Namib Dunes, next to the Namib Desert and the Namibean Dunes. As Jason told us, some areas we would drive through, got some rain during the last weeks (after dome years of complete dryness). So we have complete dry brown/beige desert areas and then areas with some green and even some little yellow flowers). Long trip about 500 kms.
Here some road shots:
At 17:15 we arrived at Hammerstein Lodge and got the keys to our Rooms. . At this lodge they have some several large cats. All were found as baby cats / cubs, their mothers killed by farmers..
The Farmers son at Hammerstein collected and feed them and they grew up with him, so they practically tamed. As they have a large area in this lodge they took about 6 Hectars (200 meters * 300 meters), build a high fence around it, so the cats can’ jump out ouf it . They have 2 caracal cats: Romeo and Juliette,, 1 leopard named Lisa , and a couple of cheetahs: Oskar and the girl Walter (how can you name a girl Walter ???). At 18:00 our catwalk started: first we visited the Carakl cat, we found them sleeping under some bushes; they have an area about 1 Hectar ( 100*100 meters). We were allowed to their area.
Next we saw the leopard named Lisa, but you are not allowed to enter her area, it is simply too dangerous, you can’t really tame a leopard.
Finally we entered the cheetah area, we found i a corner of their area. They have the larges area ( about 150*250 meters, because they like to walk and run around. They sat in the evening sun, both purring like diesels. They seemed to be happy to get a visit. Some members of our tour crew were a little bit scared, but Hadi (another Guest on our tour) and me walked to the cats and they came, smelled our hands and arms and began licking our arms. Large cats have a really rough tongue, but it is a beautiful experience, to touch such a beautiful large cat.. If they lick too long the same part of your skin, they can really lick your skin off. I think, it will be my personal highlight of our tour. The rest of the crew took a lot of photos.
Oskar and Walter/Walta ..
