Mo 7.4. Late Start today, some new people join us, 2 from UK, 2 from germany, one from Austria and a lady from South Korea. Today mainly traveling eastwards, from Windhoek, via a town named Gobabis to the border of Botswana to a town called Ghanzi, total distance about 600 km. Asphalt road, so it’s ok, The track is called Trans-Kalahari Highway (i like that name). we arrive very late 20:00, Just dinner and some traditional music and dance by some members of the San tribe. My wife is ill, some stomach problems.
Di 8.4. Early wakeup today from Ghanzi to Maun, just south of the Okavango Delta,. We arrive at 13:00, Lodge is Siratunga Lodge. In the afternoon just a trip for Money exchange and Supermarket to Maun. Relax Day, nothing special.
Mi 9.4. Wakeup at 6:00, short mini breakfast, Start at 7:00 to the Maun International Airport, lots of small airplanes, mainly 5 or 7 seat Chessnas for our flight to the Okavango delta. We are lucky and get one of the first flight at 8:00. After the rain season there’s lot of Water in the Delta only some islands left. Flight takes about 20-25 minutes, it’s very windy and the pilot, a woman named Tammy warns us, flight will be a little bit bumpy. Off we go, take off and a beautiful sight, you can see a lot of the Delta. We climb up to 1500 feet / 500 meters. It’s really bumpy, but we have a very good pilot and i feel save and take a lot of aerial photos.
Okavango is just a green dream, lots of water with some little Island with trees and palms. We fly to the main island and land on a little airstrip. we walk some meters and then we take a boat to our Lodge and arrive at 9:00. Because there is some delay with the other flights our group is not complete and we have a lot of time just to walk around and relax. 11:00 we have brunch.
Next activity is 16:00 boat tour through the delta, so i can walk around, and then do some photo sorting , copying and so on. The lodge ist gorgeous. my thought was Okavango is hot and wet, but we have about 22-25 degress, it’s dry and we have a nice wind. blue sky with some white clouds, so it’s not getting too hot. Then boat tour, we slowly drive the main river downstream: Elephants, some birds, a giraffe and finally some hippos. at 6 we stop for a sundowner drink on a little island. Purrfect sundown. now we have to go back fast to the lodge before it’s getting completely dark, so our guide drives very fast back.. made a video of boat on full speed ( engine has 80 hp..).
Dinner at 20:00 and then sleep. purrfect day for me.
Next Day: a Walking safari on an island, we go there with little boats, called Mokoros, poled by a guide, no motor. Bad luck we don’t see many large animals. another large break and then another gamedrive with a motor boat in the afternoon. I love the light in the delta.
Next morning: back to Maun. Next destination Chobe National Park and Vic Falls.
